Check External Identifiers for manual changes where Last Updated By doesn’t equal OdooBot, revealing configurations made directly in the database. Document all third-party modules from OCA, commercial providers, or partner developers. Map every integration—APIs, middleware, and custom connectors.

For Odoo Online, upgrades are triggered through the Odoo.com interface, with built-in environment management. Odoo.sh upgrades are typically done in two steps—first on staging to run a test upgrade from the latest daily production backup and verify everything, then on production by repeating the process on the master branch for the live upgrade, with a required commit push if custom modules or customizations need to be applied so the upgraded database becomes accessible. On-premise implementations use manual processes or the upgrade.odoo.com platform, which requires the most infrastructure planning.

Establish three separate environments. Keep production untouched as the live database serving users. Create a staging or testing environment for upgrade execution and validation. Establish a UAT environment for user acceptance testing—this can be the same as staging but should be isolated from ongoing technical work.

For on-premise installations, document current server specifications, verify disk space for multiple full database copies (you’ll need several), check PostgreSQL version compatibility with your target Odoo version, and identify infrastructure dependencies that must be reconfigured.

These dependencies often include DNS configurations that point to specific servers, mail server integrations for sending automated emails, external storage connections for filestore management, caching systems like Redis or Memcached, proxy or load balancer configurations, and SSL certificates that may need updating.

Create an Infrastructure Analysis Report documenting all dependencies and potential single points of failure. This becomes your reference during testing and cutover.

Common issues that complicate upgrades include incorrect product types or valuation methods, inconsistent inventory movements that don’t reconcile, mismatched accounting entries that break audit trails, broken analytic account structures, and invalid or circular data relationships.

Document the current state with baseline metrics for post-upgrade comparison. Flag known data quality issues as “expected” so they don’t trigger false alarms during validation. Prioritize cleanup: determine what must be fixed before the upgrade versus what can be addressed afterward. Define your data migration strategy for deprecated fields or models that changed between versions.
